For the last six months or so I’ve been seeing a group of chiropractors/holistic doctors/energy healers/acupuncturists, in an effort to heal my body and nix some really awful, life-long health issues.
A little back story: I’ve had seriously bad digestive issues all of my life, among other things, and I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) when I was 16. For all of you newbies to the world of digestive health, IBS is sort of like a catch-all diagnosis doctors give you when they test you for everything else and come up empty handed. I moved to Florida last fall, so I was establishing new relationships with new doctors for a few months, until February when they pretty much washed their hands of it. They told me I was going to have to live in pain for the rest of my life, that I need to eat more fiber (specifically Kelloggs’ fiber bars) and take more laxatives. I’m sorry but that’s just not how I work. I wanted a proactive solution, not some things that MIGHT work after I’m already in pain. And Kelloggs’ fiber bars??? That’s your first suggestion??? For real??? No. Just no. (For all of you that can eat Kelloggs’ fiber bars, props to you! My body just doesn’t like bars like that.)
Anyway, so I spent months getting treated for the most basic of allergens through a process called NAET, where you hold the energy of a substance while your breathe and your doctor massages and adjusts your spine (for more info on this topic, check out their website here. It’s far too much info to share for within a simple recipe post!). I only just recently started reintegrating foods and supplements to start truly healing all the seriously damaged parts of my digestive system. Enter the supplement called RepairVite (K-60). It’s a powder that you mix with water and drink. Well, the taste just wasn’t doing it for me. I literally plugged my nose and chugged it the first time I took it…you know…because that’s always the best way to support your digestive health. :-P
Both my husband and my doctor suggested I throw it into a smoothie, so the next day I did. I grabbed a bunch of ingredients, the first ones I could think of, blended them together and came up with the recipe below. It turned out amazing that first time. I was happily surprised and so satisfied. Apparently, I’m a good smoothie maker! Who knew?!?
And so, I give you my Cinnamon Chocolate Gut-Healing Smoothie. (I called it Cinnamon Chocolate, because you really don’t taste the almond butter or banana.) Make this with or without the RepairVite (K-60) and your tummy will thank you regardless!
Cinnamon Chocolate Gut-Healing Smoothie
-1 banana, cut into 1” chunks
-3 Medjool dates, pitted & quartered
-1 scoop RepairVite (K-60)
-1 tbsp raw cacao powder
-1 tbsp cacao nibs (optional: extra for sprinkling on top)
-1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional: extra for sprinkling on top)
-1 tbsp almond butter
-1/2 cup coconut milk
1. Put all ingredients into a blender.
2. Blend on desired speed until smooth.
3. Pour into a glass.
4. Optional: sprinkle cinnamon and cacao nibs on top.
I’m just getting into the world of smoothies, mostly because of this RepairVite supplement, so I’m a total newbie. If you have any tips, tricks and go-to recipes, let me know in the comments below. Your advice would be so helpful!
