Old Drawings, New Life

DrawingCait SherrickComment

Can I be honest with you?

I never intended on ever using my artistic skills in the literal sense of the word for my career.

Yes, I went to school for art.  Yes, I felt called to do it.  Yes, drawing and being artistic has always made me happy.  But, at the end of the day, I always intended on using those skills and my understanding of what went into a piece of art behind the scenes in galleries, museums and auction houses.  I never wanted to expose myself in that way or make my art that thing I hated because I had to work for it every day.

Once graduating college, I’d get job after job where I wasn’t required to use my artistic skills at all or where I’d have to use those skills for other people’s visions.  As I worked, I’d still draw here and there (I even attempted to start a similar business years ago…another post for another day), but looking at these new pieces and reviewing my old ones, even knowing my old drawings were in the bedroom closet would just make me plain old sad -- the wasted talent, the unexplored possibilities, the KNOWING.

I do believe everything happens for a reason.  I had to work all of those jobs, so I could learn that I’m meant to make art my vocation, earn real money from my creative skills and spread my design aesthetic.  It’s as simple as that.

In an effort to process all of those sad feelings, and to use what I already had, rather than letting great drawings go to waste, I’ve reworked a TON of old pieces and digitally enhanced them to make them more relevant for today’s creative world.

Drawings, talent, possibilities… wasted no more.

All of these will be available in the Prints and Home & Accessories sections of the website soon.  Make sure you’re signed up for my emails, so you can be the first to hear of their arrival!

Do you have any old projects/ventures/ideas just collecting dust somewhere in your house/mind/soul?  What small action can you do today to dust those babies off and give them some new life?  Let me know in the comments below!
